José Miguel Pérez, former vice-president of the Canary Islands government, has died

This Monday, November 18, the historic socialist leader José Miguel Pérez died at the age of 67.

During his political career, Pérez became vice president of the regional executive and minister of Education in the legislature from 2011 to 2014 in the government chaired by Paulino Rivero (Canarian Coalition).

His political career began in 2003, when he led the Gran Canaria Council’s candidacy for the PSC-PSOE after being elected Secretary of the PSOE of Gran Canaria. After this nomination to the polls, he became a councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria until 2007, when he was elected president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.

He has always been a member of the PSOE of the Canary Islands, where he served as secretary general of the party at the regional level.

Pérez was a graduate in philosophy and letters, doctor in history from the University of La Laguna (ULL) and professor of contemporary history at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).

Condolences from all political spheres

The PSOE of the Canary Islands lamented the death of Pérez in a tweet in which it highlighted that he was an “excellent colleague and a remarkable public servant”. “Forever in memory.”

The Minister of Territorial Policy and current Secretary General of the PSOE of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, also dedicated some moving words to him in X. “He was a generous and fair politician, who helped me a lot. I will be infinitely grateful to him.

The president of the Canarian Government, Fernando Clavijo (Canarian Coalition), also regretted the death of the historic socialist leader and sent his condolences to Pérez’s friends, family and colleagues through X.

From Nueva Canarias, the president of the formation, Román Rodríguez, also expressed his condolences for the death of the former socialist leader, who, he stressed, was “committed to democratic memory and public education” .

The PP also joined in the condolences, sending “its most sincere condolences to the family of the PSOE of the Canary Islands”.
