Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, said one of the conditions for his release after pleading guilty is that he not bring a case to the European Court of Human Rights to challenge the sentence.

“As a result, I chose freedom over impossible justice, given the threat of years in prison and a 175-year prison sentence with no real defense mechanisms. The United States insisted that the agreement include a clause prohibiting me from applying before the European Court of Justice. Human Rights or request information about my case”, – said Assange in his speech to the committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Assange stressed that his release was possible thanks to the support of activists and politicians due to ineffective legal protection mechanisms.
It should be noted that Julian Assange was released from British prison on June 24, 2024 following an agreement with US authorities. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obtain and disclose information relating to the national security of the United States. Assange has already been sentenced to five years in prison. He was released directly from the courtroom after his trial on the US-controlled island of Saipan.
