Junts says it will negotiate immigration with the PSOE in Geneva and Puigdemont dissociates himself from the PGE

The PSOE and Junts have been meeting for months and negotiating discreetly in Geneva (Switzerland) on the transfer of powers in matters of immigration to the Generalitat of Catalonia, according to sources from both parties. With this operation, which has been in preparation since the beginning of 2024, the socialists seek to bypass the seven post-convergent deputies in Congress, whose support has proven uncontrollable throughout the legislature.

Pedro Sánchez wants, among other things, the approval of the General State Budget and the deficit trajectory, which will be voted on again in the coming weeks in the Chamber. His treatment in Madrid, in fact, will coincide with the internal congress of Together in Calellain which they will establish a new political line and which will probably be enough for Carles Puigdemont to take over the organic reins of the party.

The former president of the Generalitat, who de facto has never stopped leading the training, categorically denies that the Geneva negotiations are linked to budgets and, in fact, has doubled down on his commitment to “the global delegation immigration powers, which we accepted.

“If anyone thinks that by letting time pass, we will accept a halfway solution (in the style of financing) is very confusing,” he said on his social networks. “And if anyone thinks that by making interested leaks we are going to be fooled, they are even more mistaken,” he added in reference to the PSOE.

On this subject, sources from the independence party specify “yes, negotiations are underway”. [con Sánchez] but always with major disagreements“. Mainly because Junts has requested that the transfer of powers to Catalonia include the border control and the deportation of repeat immigrant offenders. Both are impossible to transfer.

The context

On January 10, Junts saved two government macrodecrees by abstaining, the first important vote of the legislature, even though he had announced the day before that he would vote against them. The reason for this change of heart was that in exchange for save Sanchezwill agree on the future transfer of migration powers to Catalonia.

This agreement, however, never specified a date or how it would be implemented. Not even exactly what powers would be transferred.
