Kamala Harris announced pressure on Israel: Republican reaction

US Vice President Kamala Harris said the Biden administration used military aid to Israel as leverage to influence its war methods in the Gaza Strip.

Haaretz writes about this.

Speaking at a National Association of Black Journalists event, Harris said she supported the administration’s decision to halt shipments of heavy weapons, particularly 2,000-pound bombs, which she said could be used in densely populated civilian areas. She noted, “We have certain levers of influence that we have used,” while rejecting criticism that Israel did not do enough to limit its actions.

“We must conclude this agreement and we must do so quickly,” Harris said, adding that a key element of a settlement in the region will be reaching a peace agreement, including the release of hostages.

He recalled the recent tragedy when six hostages, including an American citizen, were killed in Gaza.

Harris also noted that she had held direct talks with Israeli and Egyptian leaders, as well as US allies, stressing the importance of reaching an agreement to ensure peace in the region. During the meetings, security issues and the need to avoid the “reoccupation of Gaza” or changes to its borders were discussed. She stressed that the ability to ensure security is important for all parties.

Harris previously said she had no intention of changing the Biden administration’s policy toward Israel. She reaffirmed her commitment to the two-state solution and expressed support for Israel’s right to self-defense. At the same time, the vice president noted that Palestinian Arabs should also have the right to a dignified life, self-determination and security.

“At this moment our main objective is to reach an agreement on the hostages and achieve a ceasefire,” he said.

The Republican Jewish Coalition expressed concern in response to Harris’ speech, noting that using critical military aid to Israel as leverage could weaken it in an existential war for survival.

“Iran understands this all too well. Kamala Harris would be a disaster as commander-in-chief,” the coalition said.
