Kanye West’s China concert cancelled due to stadium destroyed by typhoon

In the Chinese city of Haikou, Super Typhoon Yagi destroyed the roof of the Wuyuanhe Cultural and Sports Centre, where a concert by American singer Kanye West was to be held next week, Singtao reported on Saturday, September 7.

Eyewitnesses told the publication that mainly the upper part of the stadium was damaged. Photos posted online show that most of the roof is just frames and strips of fabric hanging down. Fragments of panels are scattered around the field.

The city administration confirmed the damage and told reporters that repairs would begin when the weather improved. There is no information on casualties.

Kanye West’s concert was scheduled for September 15. It is not yet known where and when the artist will perform.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Football Union announced that the friendly match between the Russian national football team and the Thai national team had been cancelled due to Typhoon Yagi, the strongest in the region for 10 years. The teams were due to meet in Hanoi on 7 September, but heavy rain hit the stadium.

On September 6, it was reported that more than 570,000 people were evacuated in the Chinese province of Guangdong due to Typhoon Yagi. The typhoon made its first landfall that day in the afternoon and then grew into a level 17 super typhoon with a maximum wind speed of 234 km/h, Izvestia recalls.
