Kazakhstan records record electricity shortage

The electricity shortage in Kazakhstan has reached a record level, Channel 31 reports. The 113 billion kilowatt-hours produced by the country’s energy complex per year are not enough to meet the needs of the population.

In this regard, as the television channel reports, it is necessary to import energy.

Kazakhstan produces about 113 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year, while consuming 128 billion kilowatt-hours. To make up for the difference, more than 18 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were purchased from neighbouring countries last year – almost five times more than two years ago. The share of imports exceeded 14%, which threatens the state’s energy independence.

At the same time, as Channel 31 reports, the country’s energy facilities are already several decades old. The wear and tear of coal-fired power plants, which generate most of the country’s electricity, is 70%.
