He King Felipe VI This Monday, he defended journalism “of the highest quality” in the context of tragedies like that of DANA which devastated the Valencian Community during the presentation of the XLI edition of the Francisco Cerecedo Journalism Prize, in Madrid. The King affirmed that during these disasters, professionals are required to report accurately. “It’s vital”underlined the King during the awards ceremony awarded by the Association of European Journalists (APE).
In this sense, the King Felipe VI stressed that given the dimension of this “tragedy and destruction” We must “recognize the best values of journalism, those which remain unchanged over time, despite the numerous changes to which the media, professionals and the profession itself are exposed”.
The King underlined the role of all professionals “attached to good journalism”. In this sense, the King, accompanied by Queen Letizia, recalled that “during this last decade, in an environment marked by disinformation, on the one hand, and by an overabundance of information, on the other hand , the winners also wanted to emphasize the need for an ethical commitment and a firm attachment to the truth in the exercise of the profession.
Felipe VI spoke to Telecinco journalist Carlos Franganillo, awarded in this edition, whom he congratulated for this recognition and highlighted him as a “born innovator”. “Its journalism continues with the best legacy of the masters of the profession and fits perfectly with new generations, being a reference of credibility through the honesty, objectivity and rigor of its work,” he said.
Furthermore, the king stressed that the news anchor always strives to be an “eyewitness to events”, as in the case of the DANA disaster, as a correspondent in Moscow and Washington or covering the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The monarch affirmed that journalism is “much more than a tool for disseminating information” and that it must continue to contribute “to lighting the way towards better informed societies committed to freedom; and must therefore “also contribute to overcoming the barriers that separate and divide”, he added.
