Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane were rewarded by UEFA and France Football with the 2024 Gerd Müller Trophy, which accredits them as the best scorers in the world last season. The Bayern Munich striker scored 52 goals last year, as many as the Frenchman from Real Madrid.
The Gerd Müller Trophy was incorporated and created for the Ballon d’Or gala in 2021. It was intended to reward Robert Lewandowski that season as the top scorer of the year. This award, also awarded by France Football magazine, pays tribute to the legendary German striker Gerd Müller. Since its introduction in 2021, this trophy rewards the player who has scored the most goals for club and country during a season.
This award is given based on simple mathematics, unlike other awards, the main criterion is the number of goals scored. And this season, the best at it has been Harry Kane. The English striker has scored 44 goals in 45 games for Bayern Munich. 36 of them in the Bundesliga and eight in the Champions League, where they reached the semi-finals.
Last season, in 2023, this trophy was won by Erling Haaland with 56 goals scored over the entire year. The Manchester City striker also won the treble with his club and deserved to win a Ballon d’Or lifted by Leo Messi. The previous two years since its creation, it had been won by Robert Lewandowski. Oddly enough, currently the Polish striker and Kane are the top scorers at the moment.
