Kyrgyzstan wants to ban the import of tobacco products that are not from EAEU countries

In Kyrgyzstan, it is proposed to introduce a temporary ban on the import, transit, re-export, customs warehousing and import into the duty-free zone of cigarettes from non-EAEU countries. The draft resolution of the Council of Ministers has been submitted for public discussion, Sputnik Kyrgyzstan reports.

According to the Ministry of Economy of the Republic, the initiator of the project, the document was prepared to protect the health of citizens of Kyrgyzstan against the consumption of counterfeit and uncertified cigarettes. In addition, the draft resolution plans to strengthen the fight against smuggling and meet the planned objectives in terms of tax revenue for the state budget.

The certificate of justification indicates that in 2023 the proportion of cigarette imports from EAEU countries amounted to 94.69% and from third countries, 5.31%. At the same time, cigarettes without special stamps are sold throughout the republic, including Bishkek.

After the Cabinet of Ministers makes a resolution, the Ministry of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic must notify the World Trade Organization and the EEC about the introduction of a temporary ban.
