La Moncloa informed Congress that the task of Begoña Gómez’s assistant “is limited to the activity of the president”

This Friday, the Director of Programs of the Secretariat of the Presidency of the Government is summoned before the Senate commission of inquiry, Maria Cristina Alvarez. EL ESPAÑOL revealed on November 14 that it was she who negotiated with the sponsors of the extraordinary chair which Begoña Gomezthe wife of Pedro Sanchezhe had at the Complutense University of Madrid. However, the Executive itself informed Congress a month and a half ago that “political and technical assistance actions are limited to the activity of the President of the Government.”

In other words, beyond ethical questions, Álvarez could have broken the law. Because this government notification was not a simple declaration on the functions of this senior Moncloa official. It was the transcription, in a written response to opposition questionswhich is established by Royal Decree 890/2023, of November 27who approves the structure of the presidency of the government.

This is stated verbatim in the article 2 of the aforementioned legal text. It defines the “functions of the Office of the Presidency of the Government”, which are nine in number:

Provide the President with political and technical information it is necessary. Advise you on these the affairs and matters at his disposal; know the programs, plans and activities of the ministries. The study and monitoring of all EU programs and actions. Also, those of the governments of autonomous communities.

Likewise, facilitate communication with the citizenship. Assist the president. Advise you on National security. And those other activities or functions which was entrusted to him by the President of the Government.

Only this last point could vaguely justify that Álvarez worked under the direction of Begoña Gómez. But never for professional reasons outside the “political and technical” functions of the Presidency.

On October 9, the Government sent a response, to which this newspaper had access, with the number Congress entry registration 43640.

The written question had been sent to the Executive two and a half months earlier, on July 27, signed by eight deputies from the Popular Party. And it contained four general questions about people and the functions assigned to them. “Begoña Gómez was affected by the general state budgets”.

This Thursday, the Government spokesperson, Pilar Alegriaargued that “citizens should know that throughout history, all partners of presidents have had a person who collaborates with your organizational and logistical tasks“.

But that’s not what the government said in its written response of October 9 to Congress. Nor what the royal decree of the Council of Ministers, dated November 27 of last year, says.

Furthermore, sources within the PP leadership recall that “it is not true that all presidents have had a person responsible for working on their partner’s private projects“On the contrary, according to Génova, “the only president who placed a civil servant under the orders of his wife, to ask for money from private companies for his wife’s business projects, and to save a salary for your spouse’s business It’s Pedro Sánchez.”

Close relationship

The director of Progranas will be subjected to questioning in the Senate in which began to be called the “Koldo commission” and which has already become a forum through which ministers, senior officials, advisors and all kinds of people involved and accused in the various cases of alleged corruption surrounding the government parade.

Álvarez must explain, according to the sources consulted, “if he worked with either For Begoña Gómez” those years in Moncloa. He thus confirmed that the emails discovered by this newspaper were sent from the official account of the Presidency of the Government.

The relationship between Álvarez and Gómez is very close, as shown in the photograph that illustrates this information: they attended together the Top 100 Magas gala, organized by the women’s supplement of EL ESPAÑOL, last February.

When the PP asked its questions in July and when the government responded in October, we already knew that Gómez had used the offices of the Presidency of Government to attend meetings and personal matters. But it had not yet emerged that a senior Moncloa official, Cristina Álvarez, dependent on the General Secretariat of the Presidencyspent at least part of his day managing the professional activities of Sánchez’s wife.

This cabinet was governed, during the six and a half years of Sánchez’s presidency, by Felix Bolanos (now Minister of Justice and the Presidency), Francisco Martin (today Government delegate in Madrid), and Judit Alexandra GonzalezCurrently.

“Firewall”

After this newspaper revealed who Álvarez is and what activities he was carrying out for Sánchez’s wife, there was a surprising movement in Gómez’s defensive strategy.

His lawyer, the former socialist Minister of the Interior Antonio Camachohanded over to Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, several emails of Álvarez in which he spoke on behalf of Gómez. With them, the lawyer tried to eliminate the charge of embezzlement against the president’s wife.

According to the content of these emails, Álvarez communicated with the companies involved in the chair de Gómez and with Complutense to agree on the use of the software developed for his master’s degree.

Indeed, it turns out that Moncloa’s assistant is sister of Esther Álvarezwho works at UCM as coordinator of the Master of Competitive Social Transformation which Begoña Gómez co-directed.

In this way, trying to exclude any embezzlement, the lawyer of Sánchez’s wife would have testified to another crime, that of embezzlement of public funds, in Moncloa, according to sources from the PP legal service. “Even if it would be easily resolved with dismissal of the workerwhich is a position of trust, alleging an excess of functions.”

In other words, Álvarez could be used as a “firewall” to protect Gómez. “They want use it with Begoña like Ábalos with her husbandthe president.” According to the sources consulted in the Senate, his appearance this Friday in the Senate could turn into an interrogation: “She will see if you consent to being used or prefer to collaborate“.

Although other sources from the PP leadership consider this to be the most likely. It is not in vain that the emails brought to the file by Begoña Gómez’s lawyer are from Alavarez’s personal accountand not from the Moncloa company, like the one revealed by EL ESPAÑOL. “This seems to indicate that he is participating in the Moncloa strategy.”
