Landtag elections in Vienna: Vienna remains a special case of Austria

Vein pelvis | “Vienna is different”-this was the motto of urban marketing of the 1980s. It also applies to politics: Vienna has been constantly managed since 1918, with the exception of Austrafashism and Nazism. The longest time with the absolute majority. This makes two million cities with an exception to structural conservative Austria – and the last large bastion of the power forces of the spice.

The state elections on Sunday have not changed this, with which a very empty election campaign has come to an end. The old and new mayor Michael Ludwig lost only a little and won 39.5 percent of Spö.

The right radical FPö is almost three times up to 20.4 percent, but remained under the previous flights of heights. Green took third place (14.5 percent), liberal Neos (9.9 percent), just recently a younger partner in the town hall, reached a light plus. They even caught up with övp (9.7 percent), which is traditionally weak in Vienna. KPö, on the other hand, faded narrowly with five percent of the obstacle.

This means that Ludwig is in a convenient starting position in order to be able to choose his coalition partner. All constellations are possible. The most likely continuation of the so -called Panchcharkle Coalition between Spö (Party Color Red) and Neos (Pink) is used. He rules over the past five years without recognizable disperses, with voting reforms, but also without serious throws.

Övp turned off especially badly

Neos has been trustworthy for improvement in the field of education from the moment of its founding in 2012. They also require more transparent administration – but it is unlikely that this is possible with the help of Spö.

This time, övp cut off especially badly, which is more than doubled. Once again, she unsuccessfully tried to get FPö to the right with the course under the law and order. The best candidate Karl Marr, 70 years old and the former chief of police of the Vienna police, resigned on Monday morning.

Although almost a quarter of the Austrian population lives in Vienna, there is no influence on federal politics. Still young federal government övp, spö and neos is harmoniously emphasized. This can change if the Minister of Finance SPOM Marcus Marterbauer represents his double budget for 2025/26 in May. This is already clear: it will not work without painful savings. But now there is a cheap temporary window, because by the fall of 2027 there are no elections and election campaigns.

Fpö was pleased with a big plus, but far from previous successes. Under the charismatic federal party leader, Hinz-Christian terrible, decisively rooted in Vienna, the party amounted to 30.5 percent ten years ago. In 2019, the scandal with ibitia fell, Fpö lost all the elections that övp won, including in Vienna. Now the situation is “normalized”, so to speak, FPE has recovered a little.

All this cannot have the significance of the mayor of Ludwig – he has already eliminated cooperation with FPö in advance. The coalition with övp is also unlikely, although Ludwig belongs to the right-pragmatic wing of the Spö party. He could give himself a green layer of paint with green, but the continuation of Neos is more likely.

In any case: the course on the merits of a well -controlled city will not change. The necessary reforms should also not remain. Ludwig, called some as the “mayor of Teflon,” avoided the proposal of the attacks of attack in the election campaign-strategy.
