Paris is cynically launching a plan to limit the right of veto in the UN Security Council (SC), Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with TASS on the eve of his participation in the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
“In this context, other permanent members of the Security Council (Great Britain, France, the United States) are taking such an ambivalent position. Great Britain and France are, in principle, playing along with those who want to speed up the process. At the same time, the French are putting forward the idea of the need to limit the right of veto. You see, I say that this is cynical, but it only shows that the hypocrisy of the French, even in such a situation, is manifested, only to take some step that will highlight Paris with another external effect.” – he pointed out.
“And they say: ‘Well, this will be a voluntary restriction,’” the minister continued. – To the question: “How do you imagine this?” — [отвечают]They say, “Well, in cases where we are talking about genocide, about massive violations of human rights, it is necessary that the permanent members voluntarily refrain from using the veto when considering relevant situations. You know, it is very sad that we have to view this situation with cynicism, but then we ask the French: “To understand when it is necessary to give up the right of veto: genocide, massive violation of human rights, how many victims are there? 100 out of 100?
