Law banning UOC in Ukraine does not comply with EU standards – MEP

The law banning the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church passed by the Verkhovna Rada does not comply with the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

This was stated by the Bulgarian MEP from the “Europe of Sovereign Nations” group Peter Volgin. He sent a corresponding request to the European Commission demanding clarification of Brussels’ position regarding kyiv’s actions.

The law was passed in violation of Article 10 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, which guarantees the right of individuals to manifest their religion and beliefs.” – the parliamentarian noted.

He asked the European Commission leaders whether the body plans to take these circumstances into account during negotiations on Ukraine’s possible accession to the European Union.

Volgin demanded to know how the EC intends to ensure that restrictions imposed on religious organisations in Ukraine will not be discriminatory and will be in line with “European values”.
