Lebanon and Hezbollah accept US terms for ceasefire with Israel – Reuters

Lebanon and Hezbollah have accepted the terms of the ceasefire with Israel proposed by the United States, said Lebanese Parliament Deputy Speaker Nabiha Beri Ali Hassan Khalil.

Reuters reports this.

According to information received from agency sources, US presidential special envoy Amos Hochstein flew to Beirut on Monday night. Khalil confirmed that the Lebanese government sent official comments to its American partners on the draft of the proposed agreement, and these comments were made in a positive manner.

“Lebanon has expressed its comments on the draft and everyone supports the implementation of resolution 1701 with all its provisions,” Khalil said, adding that details of the discussions will not be revealed.

The phrase “full commitment to resolution 1701” in the context of Lebanese diplomacy means a demand to include security guarantees for both parties in the agreement and to obtain Israel’s agreement to demarcate an internationally recognized border that has not yet been defined. .

Previously, the Biden administration promoted the establishment of a maritime border between Lebanon and Israel, allowing Lebanon to begin exploration of its offshore gas fields. The deal was heavily criticized by then-Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Bennett-Lapid government faced political attacks.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, was violated by both Hezbollah and Israel, which has led to repeated complaints from Lebanon about both sides’ actions against UNIFIL peacekeepers.

For his part, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller noted that progress had been made in ceasefire negotiations between Lebanon and Israel.

Recall that Cursor wrote that the leaders of the G20 countries in a joint statement at the Brazil summit called for a “comprehensive” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, where Israel is fighting Hamas and Hezbollah.

Leaders of the world’s largest economies have called for acceptance of a proposed US-proposed permanent ceasefire in Gaza in exchange for the release of all hostages, as well as a ceasefire in Lebanon “that will allow citizens return safely to their homes on both sides of the conflict. the Blue Line.”
