It is difficult to write with an eye toward the future when the impacts of a humanitarian disaster of this magnitude are still very present and priorities are placed on essential immediate responses. But urgency should not be an alibi to avoid responsibilities – political and judicial – or to avoid reflecting on the many lessons that DANA has left us and how we can convert them into collective lessons.
We have to do this if we don’t want the same thing to happen again and again. Periodically, life offers us lessons that we do not know how to transform into lessons. This is what happened with the Great Recession, then with the pandemic, and it may happen again with the disaster unleashed – but not caused – by DANA.
