The streets across Spain were dyed purple this Monday on the occasion of the International Day Against Gender Violence, a year in which 41 women were murdered in the hands of their partners or ex-partners.
The aim of the demonstrations is to “Fear changes sides”. They are calling for more action and more protection of the system because the numbers speak for themselves. Since 2003 1,286 women were murderedaccording to official statistics, although the case of a 17-year-old boy arrested as the alleged perpetrator of the murder of his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend has not yet been recorded.
Once again, on November 25, there was different demonstrations in defense of the eradication of gender violence. This is the case of Madrid, where two different calls took place practically at the same time.
When calling the Madrid Forum The Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, participated with other socialist leaders. Redondo stressed that “violence through social networks, pornography on the Internet, are really a problem, we must be aware of approaching it seriously, with a lot of analysis, with consensus, which I believe society has.”
The head of Equality deplored that through social networks, “if a person is violent, their violence will come back to them”.
“Young people feed on social networks, they communicate via social networks, and social networks, via the algorithm, feed us, prevent us from recognizing others, we get what we want to get ourselves. I think it “There is a problem. Young digital people must open their eyes to other realities, listen to their peers and be aware that equality benefits everyone,” he stressed.
During the call in which Redondo participated with other socialists, they denounced sexual violence, gender violence, indirect violenceprostitution, sexism or surrogacy, among other problems. In addition, they draw attention to the “difficulties” encountered by women with disabilities and ask society to listen to their voices, give them attention and provide solutions for their accessibility to detection systems and to care resources, by promoting their autonomy in intervention processes.
They demand more measures and more actions
On the other hand, the demonstration called by the 8M Commissions of the Feminist Movement of Madrid, in the presence of representatives of Podemos and Sumar, demanded an end to impunity against feminicides, indirect violence, hate crimes against sexual diversity and sexual violence. They also demanded public policies for prevention and protection of survivors, in particular the elderly, migrants and refugees, precarious people, trans people and children, and that public services to combat gender-based violence be provided by “non-outsourced” staff. “
In statements to the media before the start of the march, one of the spokespersons of the 8M Commission, Amaia Ugarte, indicated that they were meeting to denounce “all the violence that all women suffer”from sexual violence to indirect violence, including femicide or economic violence.
Protests took to the streets across the country. From Barcelona, Santiago de Compostela, Seville or Madrid. In all cities, they also insisted on the same motto: that the shame and fear be for the aggressors rather than for the victims.
It is precisely for this reality to change that we need more measures, more actions, more security and more realistic and more effective care for women victims of gender-based violence. This same Monday, we learned that the Government was preparing a new State Pact against gender-based violence. Complementary measures that will focus on indirect, economic and digital violence and with which the PP agrees.
