Oku.Az informs that Leyla Aliyeva, who participated in the opening of the event held within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) organized by Azerbaijan, welcomed the guests and emphasized the importance of environmental protection of the Caspian Sea. Participants of the event were informed about the rich ecosystem of the Caspian Sea, which constitutes more than 40 percent of the world’s total lake water resources. Leyla Aliyeva noted that the problems experienced in the Caspian Sea affect the population of several animals, including seals, sturgeons and salmon.
Leyla Aliyeva addressed a number of issues related to the Kizilagac National Park, which was selected as the first protected coastal area created in the Caspian Sea within the framework of relevant activities carried out by the IDEA Public Union, including the “Rich Basins” , The projects “One Drop” and cooperation with the organization “Blue Marine Foundation” were touched on. It was highlighted that since 2011, with the help of more than 7,000 volunteers, around 120 tons of waste have been collected and recycled from coastal areas. Emphasizing the role of young people in the field of environmental protection, Leyla Aliyeva highlighted the importance of training young specialists who will work to preserve the Caspian Sea for future generations.
At the end of the speech, Leyla Aliyeva highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring and analysis for the protection of the unique ecological system of the Caspian Sea and called on representatives of international experts and research centers to present joint projects and initiatives.
Taleh Ziyadov, General Director of the Port of Baku, Ghalib Israfilov, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations in Geneva and other international organizations, Pascal Peduzzi, Head of UNEP “GRID-Geneva” participated in the round table program, professor of the Institute of Environment and Sustainability of the University of UCLA, head of the “CTrees” project Sassan Saatchi, Baku port expert and coordinator of CASPISNET Elnur Safarov, professor of Nazarbayev University Emil Bayramov and Professor of the PPShirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Andrei Kostyanoy, presented different opinions on the topic of discussion.
At the end of the event, the creation of the Caspian Climate and Sustainability Center was announced with the aim of studying the comprehensive problems observed in the Caspian Sea and presenting proposals for their possible solutions.
