Lille loses to Sporting Portugal, Mbappé and Real win against Stuttgart

Lille missed out on their debut in the new Champions League formula by losing to Sporting Portugal (2-0) and finishing with ten men on Tuesday 17 September. Real Madrid beat Stuttgart (3-1) thanks to a goal from Kylian Mbappé.

The match ended two minutes before the break for LOSC, who conceded a goal from Viktor Gyökeres (38th) and lost Angel Gomes, who was sent off for a second yellow card (40th). A powerful shot from Zeno Debast (65th) ended the evening for the northerners in this first round of the regular season.

The success of the evening was achieved by Bayern Munich, who crushed Dinamo Zagreb (9-2) with a quadruple from Harry Kane and a double from Michael Olise, the new French international.

The Bavarian giants thus take the lead in this mini-championship with thirty-six teams, pending the matches on Wednesday and Thursday, as UEFA had opted to fully expose its new eight-match formula by dividing the first match into three days.

The reigning champions, Real Madrid, were on the verge of losing their place when they were caught by VfB Stuttgart with a header from Deniz Undav (68th). However, Mbappé opened the scoring with a superb pass from Rodrygo (46th). But their German defender Antonio Rüdiger (83rd) and their Brazilian forward Endrick (90th + 5) secured the victory at the end of the match (83rd).

PSG-Girona, Wednesday

Liverpool also got off to a good start by beating AC Milan (3-1) at San Siro in the first afternoon’s clash, before the Manchester City-Inter Milan and Monaco-FC Barcelona matches on Thursday.

Another French international scored, Ibrahima Konaté (23rd), who equalised for the Reds after Christian Pulisic (2nd) had opened the scoring. Then his central defender partner Virgil van Dijk (41st) and the Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai (67th) overthrew the Rossoneri. This victory suits Liverpool’s new Dutch coach Arne Slot, who suffered a 1-0 defeat at Anfield against Nottingham Forest. At AC Milan, on the other hand, new coach Paulo Fonseca is in trouble and has lost his goalkeeper Mike Maignan, also from the Blues, injured in his left knee.

In the first two matches of the day, Juventus easily got rid of PSV Eindhoven (3-1), Paris Saint-Germain’s opponent for the third matchday and Brest for the sixth, at the end of the afternoon, and Aston Villa won in Bern against Young Boys (3-0).

On Wednesday, PSG will take to the stage at the Parc des Princes against Girona, while Brest will play Sturm Graz on Thursday.
