When measured over a relatively short period of time, radio station audiences are likely to show significant variation. The 2024 school year, with its measurement established by Médiamétrie for September-October and revealed on Thursday, November 14, is no exception to the rule. Two performances especially illustrate this: France Inter once again reaches the highest level and Europe 1, without a doubt, returns from the devil.
Although it is not new, a third trend is also evident: with 37,846,000 daily listeners, the radio medium continues to let its faithful escape: 295,000 compared to the start of the 2023 school year and 366,000 compared to the April-June period. . Its accumulated audience (AC) now stands at 67.5%, compared to 68.6% a year ago (-1.1 points). But not the entire sector is in the same boat. If music stations are struggling (except Nostalgie, + 0.6 points to 6.6%), Radio France are all celebrating.
Attracting almost 7.2 million listeners every day, or 265,000 more than in 2023 at the same time, France Inter has never been more listened to. With 12.8%, it reached an unprecedented cumulative audience level for back to school (+0.3 points compared to 2023), to which is added a stratospheric audience share of 15.1% (thanks to a listening duration in progression of eleven minutes). For the first time, the morning program, broadcast between 7 and 10 a.m., exceeds 5 million daily listeners (+244,000 listeners in one year). But Adèle Van Reeth, director of the station, sees “green” everywhere: from morning to night, all shows expand their audience.
On Europe 1, Constance Benqué, president of Lagardère News, makes exactly the same observation. “From Dimitri Pavlenko’s morning show to Olivier Delacroix’s “La Libre antenne”, everything is green”summarizes in turn. With an accumulated audience of 4.4% (+0.6 points in one year, the highest growth in the market), Europa 1 brings together 2,486,000 listeners daily (+347,000 in one year) who, in addition, remain connected for eleven minutes more every day.
Did the arrival of Pascal Praud, at the beginning of the 2023 school year, allow the radio to regain an upward dynamic? Cyril Hanouna’s, every day between 4 and 6 p.m., acts as a second elevator: his show “On marche sur le tête” “doubles the accumulated audience and increases market share by a third”. METROme Benqué sees these results as an incentive to continue along the path of “stability, but also the audacity to free oneself from political correctness”.
