Two Spanish citizens are under investigation by the Lithuanian Public Prosecutor’s Office for alleged paternity of a failed terrorist act in this Baltic country, as reported this Tuesday by said institution. The events allegedly occurred last September, when the two Spaniards were arrested in Riga, the capital of neighboring Latvia, by state security services.
According to the preliminary investigation, the two suspects went to the town of Siauliai, in the north of the country, with the intention to light a fire in the production facilities of a private company, as well as combustion equipment located outside, according to the press release, which does not provide further details.
However, the suspects “did not succeed in implementing their criminal plan or hiding from law enforcement,” the prosecution said. Thanks to cooperation with the Latvian authorities, the two Spaniards were apprehended by Latvian secret service agents in Riga and extradited to Lithuania in accordance with a European arrest warrant.
Currently there is detained in preventive detentionwhile the preliminary investigation is carried out under Article 250 on Terrorism of the Lithuanian Criminal Code. “More detailed information will be provided as soon as it cannot compromise the success of the ongoing investigation,” the prosecution said in its press release.
