Emmanuel Macron’s impeachment proceedings: Mathilde Panot (LFI) calls on the PS not to prevent “a democratic debate”
The head of the deputies of La France Insoumise (LFI), Mathilde Panot, called on her socialist colleagues on Monday not to oppose the examination by the National Assembly of a procedure for the dismissal of Emmanuel Macron, on behalf of “democratic debate” and the “popular sovereignty”.
The LFI deputies submitted a resolution aimed at initiating a procedure for the impeachment of the President of the Republic, signed by 81 deputies. This procedure, governed by article 68 of the Constitution, is long and difficult to complete and would ultimately require the approval of two-thirds of the parliamentarians of the two chambers, meeting in the High Court.
A challenge when a good part of the left has shown itself reluctant and the right, brought back into the centre of the game with the arrival of Michel Barnier at Matignon, could show itself reluctant to intervene in depth. Mathilde Panot believes, however, that carrying it out successfully is still ” possible “.
The bill will be put to a first vote on Tuesday morning by the National Assembly, the highest executive body, which must decide on its admissibility before it can continue its journey through the law committee.
“I hope that the Socialist Party decides that it agrees not to dismiss the President of the Republic, which is a debate in itself. (…)but to transmit [le texte] and that we have a democratic debate”Mathilde Panot insisted during a press conference at the Assembly.
“We are the defenders and guardians of popular sovereignty and of a National Assembly that has been so trampled in recent years that it no longer even remembers that it can use all the tools at its disposal”The LFI deputy insisted, for whom the head of state “transfer[é] the powers granted to it by the Constitution”.
