SEO/BirdLife, in collaboration with the Autonomous Organization of National Parks (OAPN), has been developing for several years a network of live cameras in different national parks and on this occasion shows us a very elusive speciesthe Taragote falcon (Falco pelegrinoides).

The main objective of this project is to highlight natural heritage that these protected spaces cherish by means of a live camera in each of them.

Six live parks

Thanks to its publication on the Internet with open access and from anywhere in the world, the life and biology of birds are brought closer to society, as well as the possibility of connect with nature and learn about national parksnatural gems of this country.

Currently, SEO/BirdLife broadcasts from six parks live: Sierra de Guadarrama, Cabañeros, Tablas de Daimiel, Doñana, Archipelago of Cabrera and, from today, the Timanfaya National Park (Lanzarote, Canary Islands).

Timanfaya National Park

It is located in the central-western part of the island of Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, and stands out for its volcanic landscape, result of eruptions which occurred between 1730 and 1736.

Lava formations, craters and ash fields create a spectacular, almost lunar-like environment, a punforgettable araje for all who see it, for its originality and beauty.

unique habitat

Although seemingly desolate, the interaction between lava, wind and rare rain has given rise to a unique habitat colonized by a plant and animal world of great adaptive value and generally endemic.

Due to its importance, Timanfaya, in addition to being a national park, is a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) and a Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO in 1993, highlighting its global value for biodiversity.

A very special falcon

The tagarot falcon is one of the our rarest and most little-known birds of prey. With an uncertain taxonomic status (it is currently considered a subspecies of the peregrine falcon), in our country it lives exclusively in the Canary Islands.

We can see it in lava cliffs and dry ravines covered with sparse bushes, where it feeds mainly on the abundant pigeons which share with it some of the driest places on the island.

Although there seems to be a clear positive trend in recent years on all the islands, in Lanzarote It has around 20 territoriesaccording to the III Atlas of Breeding Birds of Spain.

The tagarot falcon, as a species, belongs to the category of Vulnerable in the Red Book of Birds of Spain. The Canarian population is sedentary, with adults present in the territories throughout the year.

What will you see?

In order to know and observe the species, SEO/BirdLife installed two cameras in an area frequented by the Tagarote falcon. One of them is located in a volcanic cave where it has been breeding for other years and another outdoor camera placed to observe the volcanic landscape of the park and be able to see the falcons performing flights.

The time of reproduction It begins in mid-October, although it will not select the location to place the nest until mid-February.

Reveal aspects of breeding

The installation takes place between mid-February and early March and consists of three to five dull white eggs heavily mottled with rusty red.

Precise information is lacking regarding several aspects of breeding, such as the incubation period or the parental investment of each parent. Young people take the plane in the first half of Maybut they remain in the parental territory until the end of September, during which time they are fed mainly by the male.
