López Miras lacks “greater government involvement with universities for the development of LOSU”

Fernando López Miras is direct with the Spanish government when talking about the financing of public universities: “There was no dialogue with the autonomous communities before the Organic Law of the University System (LOSU), and this generates dysfunctions.

The President of the Region of Murcia made these statements at the opening of the General Assembly of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), which is being held this year at the University of Murcia. During this event, the head of the Executive of Murcia highlighted that “it is important to reach 1% of GDP for universities“.

He maintains, however, that “to require the Communities to reach this 1%, The government will have to give the same to all of us“. López Miras criticizes the dynamic of “I invite and you pay which also occurs in the Dependency Law, in which, having to face 50% autonomy, they only pay 20% or 25%”.

In the same spirit, he takes the opportunity to discuss the underfinancing of the Region of Murcia, one of his main demands from the Central Government: “If all the Autonomous Communities of Spain they receive more education than the Region of Murciaall other communities have an easier time reaching 1%.”

In this context, it is necessary to highlight the roadmap that the Regional Government has established in collaboration with the universities, with which they have managed to ensure that the university system of the Region of Murcia “is every day more consolidated and more competitive“.

Among these measures, the signing of a new multi-year financing plan stands out, with 1,850 million euros for the next five years between public universities and the regional government and which will ensure their financial autonomy.

Likewise, López Miras points out that the regional government, in collaboration with public universities, also works on projects such as the new law on universities in the Region of Murcia and the Law of Science, Technology and Innovation, in addition to the new Industrial Plan of the Region of Murcia: “We collaborate, we go hand in hand and we move forward on a roadmap that will allow us to achieve the objectives set. “

“Our universities are centers of knowledge, research, innovation and talent,” concludes the regional president. “Administrations must support, protect and promote universities to provide them with the necessary resources“.
