This is not the first time that Madrid has implemented a measure of this type. Since January 2021, when the EMT announced this initiative to prevent the use of private vehicles after the damage caused by Filomena, there have already been 54 free days spread over 19 periods. More than 52.7 million people (11.19 million non-regular users of public transport) have already benefited from this initiative.
Other times when this measure was activated were Black Friday, the Easter holidays, the NATO summit and the long Constitution weekend. This measure, the City Hall explains in a statement, will continue to be implemented “on days identified as high traffic”, as well as on episodes of heavy pollution.
