The city of Madrid has announced different actions and efforts in the reforestation and landscaping different spaces with the current and future planting of more than 6,000 trees and 7,000 shrubs.

Announcements of more green spaces, more trees and more recreational spaces for residents of different neighborhoods followed one another during these days, including the action in the neighborhood of Mount Carmelo (municipality of Fuencarral-El Pardo) which will have a plant cover of 5,350 trees with 1.4 million euros of investment.

It was also reported by the municipality that the transformation of two new green spaces into Villaverde with 244 trees, 7,000 shrubs and improvements in accessibility and renovation of the Pinar del Rey and Pinar de la Elipawith new spaces for neighbors and nearly 600 additional trees.

Two projects for Montecarmelo

As for the most significant intervention in Montecarmelo, the two interventions which will last, initially, over the next four months and aim to strengthen the plant cover of this district and thus preserve one of its characteristics.

These are two projects that reinforce the strategy for maintaining and expanding green spaces in the city of Madrid launched five years ago by the Department of Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility.

These actions are in addition to municipal strategy which, since 2019, has dedicated 107 million euros for the improvement of 118 green spacess in the city, 96 of which have already been completed.

Border forests

The first of these actions aims to reforest various green spaces located in this district, with the creation of plant cover, made up of border forest plantationswhich seek to mitigate the impact produced by road infrastructure around these green spaces, such as the railway line, parallel to it along its entire length, and the M-40 and M-607 roads.

It will be carried out with trees adapted to the area, in areas devoid of woody vegetation, which will lead to the gradual evolution of the natural series of vegetation in this environment and the obtaining of a consolidated and quality forest massif.

They will comply with a landscape and soil protection functionthus increasing the park’s ability to wildlife shelter and also offering a recreational service to walkers.

Adapted species

Species that do not require irrigation will be planted, with the exception of initial irrigation after planting. These are therefore species of low water needs, adapted to climatic conditions from Madrid and with a planting framework that guarantees its perfect development.

Given the forest nature of the plots, the objective is to create plant cover predominantly pine (Pinus halepensis and Pinus pinea) and scattered oaks (Quercus rotundifolia), favoring the natural creation of new strata of bush, which collaborate in the recovery of the original ecosystem of the regionincreasing the biodiversity of these areas.

All the plantations of this first action amount to 3,120 trees of different sizes and 560 plants in a forest cell. Its budget is 778,940 euros and the expected execution time is four months.

Tree planting

The second intervention in Montecarmelo envisages the tree planting in the area of Santuario de Valverde Avenue and in the surrounding streets.

With trees adapted to the territory, the objective is to preserve the forest character of the natural environment of Montecarmelo, as well as providing an improvement to landscape plants which allows mobility and accessibility of neighbors and their enjoyment of nature.

The project underlines the importance, both from a recreational and cultural point of view, of having an ideal and well-preserved forest area for an urban environment like the new district of Montecarmelo.

CO2 absorption

This new mass of trees will be able to absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere and thus help reduce the carbon footprint of the entire municipality.

Although this action has also chosen mainly species that do not need a lot of water, in some plots it has been planned drip irrigation for specimens planted in alignment, as in the case of the so-called Camino de la Cañada, located next to the Fuencarral cemetery and which is part of the routes from Madrid to Santiago de Compostela.

Given the forest nature of these plots, the objective was to create plant cover, with pine forests (Pinus halepensis), cedars (Deodara cedar), eleagnos (Eleagnus angustifolia) and oaks (Quercus rotundifolia).

Also smaller trees like junipers (Oxycedrus juniper) to accompany oaks and combine strata of different heights. In total, 2,230 trees of different sizes and 168 seedlings will be planted in the forest cells. He the budget is 631,000 euros and the expected completion time is four months.

Transformation in Villaverde

These interventions, which total a joint investment of more than a million euros and with an area of more than 43,000 m², have not only renewed the image of the neighborhood’s green spaces, but have integrated criteria of sustainability, accessibility and improvement of climatic comfort.

The work includes two different actions: the complete renovation of the green space located between the María de Villota Sports Center and the School of El Greco and the rehabilitation of a recreational space between Hulla and Huertas del Río streets.

More quality of life

Cool microclimates

With an extension of 29,920 m² and an investment of 436,000 eurosthe renovation of this green space in Villaverde was carried out according to strict sustainability criteria. The intervention The presence of vegetation has notably increased with the planting of 98 trees and 2,618 shrubs of native species adapted to Madrid’s climate and low water requirements.

These specimens were selected for their ability to improve thermal comfort and its ornamental contributionthus helping to combat the heat island effect and promoting local biodiversity.

The arrangement of the vegetation followed an exhaustive study of shadows, allowing the strategic placement of trees and shrubs to create cool microclimates in rest and transit areas. Additionally, the project includes the integration of green corridors that connect areas of the park, eliminating isolated spaces and promoting ecological connectivity.

Sustainable drainage

Street furniture has also been renovated and placed at key points of accessible routes, thus ensuring rest areas do not obstruct the passage of users.

Particular attention was paid to lighting with high-efficiency LED technology to guarantee optimal visibility at night and low light pollution. Additionally, the project introduced sustainable drainage systems that incorporate permeable sidewalks and infiltration ditches to optimize rainwater management, promoting natural infiltration and reducing soil erosion.

Leisure area
