A group of demonstrators from various housing rights associations broke into the headquarters of the Ministry of Social Rights in the capital on Tuesday to demand that the government take action against the Caixabank evictions. The concentrates handed over to the head of the department a file with more than 50 cases of mortgagees, tenants and ‘squatters’ who live in the housing of Caixabank and its associated funds.

The objective of the concentration was to obtain mediation from the ministry with the banking entity to unblock the negotiations and demand social rents. “We want all evictions to stop and for La Caixa to negotiate social rents, without exclusions or pressure of any kind. »

Among the associations present at the concentration were several platforms of people affected by the mortgage as well as the city’s tenants’ unions. The State holds 17% of the capital of Caixabank and this is why it considers that the entity is “guilty” and the government “responsible” for having evicted families “with public money”.

The demonstrators demanded from the start to speak with the Minister of Social Rights, Pablo Bustinduy, to put pressure on the banking entity and lead to a scheduled meeting. After a few minutes of tension, the ministry agents decided to register the file presented by the different entities participating in the concentration.

Among the demonstrators were Blanca, expelled a few months ago, and Pilar, whom Caixabank tried to expel four times despite being in a vulnerable situation and victim of gender violence. “We have tried to negotiate in different ways, there are families in the street because they do not want to sit with us,” denounced the demonstrators.

Security forces quickly arrived to warn the sixty demonstrators that they would be arrested if they did not leave the building. Finally, after the submission of the file and the commitment of the ministry agents to personally deliver the document to Minister Bustinduy, they were identified by the police and left the building declaring that they were leaving this Tuesday but that they would return .
