This year, the Plaza de Colón will inaugurate new Christmas lighting with the installation of a large luminous angel that the City Hall has called the Angel of Madrid, made up of 36,400 light points.
According to the newspaper ‘El Mundo’, source of the Works and Equipment Zone, the element, whose installation began this morning and will last several days, will measure 18 meters high.
The Angel of Madrid will have 36,400 light points which, like the rest of the city’s Christmas lighting, will be made of highly energy-efficient LEDs and will have a power of 1,820 W.
This new element will replace the giant nativity scene that could be seen during the last two Christmases in Colón and which will move this year to the confluence of Alcalá Street and Gran Vía, in front of the Metropolis building.
This figure will be one of the many novelties of this year’s Christmas lighting, which will reach more than 230 locations in all 21 districts and will feature almost 12 million 100% LED bulbs.
Another new feature will be the lights designed by first and second primary school pupils who took part in the school drawing competition organized by the Town Hall last March. This is a competition whose winning proposals have been transformed into Christmas lights and can be seen around the Plaza Mayor, especially in the streets of Sal, Gerona, Felipe III, Siete de Julio, Ciudad Rodrigo and Toledo.
To this will be added other new features such as a giant star 18 meters long at the confluence of Cea Bermúdez with the Plaza de Cristo Rey, the almost 37 meter high fir tree of the Puerta del Sol or a new design of the Birth of the Puerta de Alcalá. There will also be no shortage of other classics, such as the grand ball at the confluence of Bailén with the Plaza de España or the Menina on the Paseo del Prado.
In addition, as in previous years, there will be proposals from prestigious designers and specialists, to which will be added the proposals of Pedro del Hierro, Juana Martín and Ulises Mérida thanks to the agreement between the Town Hall and the Association of Designers of Fashion of Spain (ACME).
In total, the streets of the capital will be decorated with 7,100 chains, 121 cherry trees and a dozen large illuminated fir trees, in addition to other Christmas motifs.
The national men’s football coach, Luis de la Fuente, will be responsible this year for turning on the Christmas lights in the city of Madrid in collaboration with the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida. The event, which will hold several surprises, will take place on November 28 precisely at Puerta del Sol with the big fir tree in the background.
