Maduro brings forward Christmas to October 1 amid deep political crisis in Venezuela

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced the advancement of the start of Christmas to October 1, celebrating the “good economic outlook” for this month of August. During the Con Maduro+ program on the official Globo Visión network, in which he addressed various current issues, the president said that he “already smells like Christmas.”

“September is coming and thanks to the fact that we closed August with good economic prospects, we can say, and I have already said it, it smells like Christmas,” he said. He also assured that nothing and no one will prevent peace in the country, according to Globo Visión.

Maduro also referred to the power outage of last Friday, the 30th, calling it “the strongest attack on the national electrical system,” against which “the Venezuelan people gave a great demonstration to the fascists and got to work.”

According to Europa Press, this is not the first time that the Venezuelan president has brought forward the date of Christmas: he already did it in 2020 to compensate for the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and he did it again the following year. It is common for the Government to distribute food in the poorest neighborhoods on these dates.

Maduro also took the opportunity to send a message to opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, against whom an arrest warrant was issued yesterday, after the prosecutor’s office summoned the opponent three times and he decided not to appear, not knowing in what capacity he should appear and not acknowledging the crimes that the Public Ministry (MP) attributes to him.

“No one is above the laws and institutions,” warned Maduro, who called González Urrutia a “conchao” and a “coward.”

The deputy’s investigation against González Urrutia is linked to the publication on a website by the main opposition coalition, the United Democratic Platform, of “83.5% of the electoral data” collected by witnesses and poll workers to demonstrate that their candidate won the July 28 presidential election by a wide margin. The PUD published this record, which the executive calls “false,” after the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Maduro the winner.
