Maia Sandu wins elections thanks to foreign vote

The Moldovan president and candidate for re-election, pro-European Maia Sandu, got 51.34% votes after counting 94.41% of the votes published, according to preliminary data provided this Sunday by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Moldova.

For almost the entire count, Sandu was behind his rival in the second round of the presidential election, the candidate of the pro-Russian Socialist Party of Moldova, Alexander Stoianoglobut it began to recover with the results of the vote abroad, where more than 300,000 Moldovans exercised their right to vote.

In fact, this was repeated in the scenario of the referendum on the inclusion in the constitution of Moldova of membership in the European Union as a national goal, in which it won. Yes with 50.4% thanks to voting abroad.

The consultation was held two weeks ago, simultaneously with the first round Moldovan presidential elections during which Sandu got 42.49% votes, far ahead of Stoianoglo, who obtained 25.95%.

According to preliminary data from the CEC, Stanianoglo received 51.21% of the votes, but Sandu’s advantage abroad is overwhelming: with 46.75% Of the votes counted, the president obtained 81%.

“I appeal to all members of electoral commissions, regardless of the candidate they represent. Be careful and correct when counting votes” Sandu said during a press appearance as soon as the polls closed.
