Majority of Germans oppose Scholz’s nomination as chancellor candidate in 2025

More than two-thirds of German voters are opposed to the Social Democrats (SPD) re-nominating Olaf Scholz as their candidate for chancellor in the 2025 parliamentary elections.

This is confirmed by the results of a survey conducted by the public opinion research institute YouGov, reports Tagesspiegel. According to the newspaper, 2,126 respondents took part in the survey.

“68 percent of them were against Scholz’s second term and his candidacy for the post of chancellor. Only 20 percent of those surveyed supported his candidacy.” – the publication states.

The poll also shows that the majority of voters (60 percent) who voted for the SPD in 2021 no longer consider Scholz a suitable candidate to lead the Social Democratic coalition.

And only 31 percent of those surveyed were willing to vote for their party again, with the current chancellor in the lead.

Previously EADaily Some of the German chancellor’s associates in the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) were reportedly considering excluding Scholz from running in the 2025 national elections due to his growing unpopularity.

They plan to replace him with a “more popular politician”, for example, the German Minister of Defense. Boris Pistorius or the Prime Minister of the Federal State of Saarland Anke Rehlinger.
