Mancha Centro Hospital, recognized as a unit of excellence in atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome

The Mancha Centro University Hospital, dependent on the Health Service of Castilla-La Mancha, has received recognition of certification as a unit of excellence in Atypical Hemolytic-Uraemic Syndrome, a very serious and complex disease that affects the kidney and can lead the patient to require dialysis within hours and with very high mortality rates.

Early diagnosis is essential to recover kidney function and avoid major complications that can lead to mortality. This is an extremely rare pathology, with an average of three cases diagnosed per year, which mainly affects young women of childbearing age, as the Commission reports in a press release.

THE Spanish Society for Health Care Quality presented this recognition to the Mancha Centro University Hospital, the first in the region and the second in Spain, after the recognition of Dr. Peset from Valencia, thus highlighting the excellence of the Atypical Hemolytic-Uraemic Syndrome Unit, after two years of multidisciplinary work in the Nephrology, Hematology, Hospital Pharmacy and Clinical Analysis departments, all areas essential for the early diagnosis and early treatment of the disease.

The protocol with which this multidisciplinary team works has made it possible to shorten the delays, going from two days to two hours on average to have a diagnosis and to be able to request the treatment which will facilitate the recovery of renal function and thus prevent them. to develop complications that could endanger the patient’s life.

THE Head of the Nephrology Department, Rebeca Garcíaaccompanied by the heads of the other departments concerned, Isabel Cano, of Hematology; Natalia Andrés, Pharmacy; and Joaquín Domínguez, of Clinical Analysis; They coordinated and established an action protocol so that within a few hours the patient was diagnosed and received the necessary treatment to begin to counteract all the processes triggered by this disease.

He medical director of Integrated Care Management of Alcázar de San Juan, Dr. Joaquín Torresthanked the Spanish Society for the Quality of Health Care for granting this recognition, while recognizing all Management professionals for their constant efforts to improve the quality of health care.
