Manuel Mon and Justo Fernández, those who suffered reprisals and who, almost a century later, can be buried with dignity

They were killed on July 23, 1936. Manual My40 years old, and Justo Fernández23 years old, were murdered when the fascists entered the town of Ribadeo, in Lugo. During these 88 years, they searched for their body. Today, their families were finally able to take them back. Of course, during the exhumation, up to five bodies were searched, but only two turned up.

My time belonged to the Carabinieri Corps which defended one of the entrances to Ribadeo when the fascists entered the city. The discovery of his remains “suggests joy and emotion for those who are no longer there or who cannot see that they are his children”, assures his granddaughter María José Mon in front of the microphones of laSexta.

Justo Fernández left the Asturian town of Vegadeo, his hometown, to help the Ribadians. The rebels stopped him on the road and he had to blow his nose. The historian of the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory (ARMH), Miguel Freire, explains that “they killed him for having made the gesture of taking a handkerchief out of his pocket”.

What the fascists carried out in Ribadeo on July 23, 1936 was real carnage. ARMH Galicia spokesperson Carmen García-Rodejo says “they came in” and “killed a lot of people indiscriminately.” “Bestial”, pronounce the vowel forcefully. They shot everyone they found, including Rosalía. This is the servant of the convent of the Poor Clares who was killed while looking out the window just to see what was happening.

During the exhumation, images of which provided by Óscar Rodríguez of the ARHM can be seen above, only two of the five corpses sought could be found. Something that for ARHM Ponferrada member Marco Antonio González “is to make this democracy that we have a little clean”, of course “Many people are still missing”. “Many Democrats, men and women, were thrown away, hidden in the gutters,” says González.

Now at least two families can bury, after almost a centuryto their deaths. A question that the mayor of Ribadeo, Manuel Vega, did not hesitate to boast about, who assured “of course” that he was “proud that the Administrations” were “united on what is important”.
