Marvel’s Most Beloved Returns, But It’s Late

The first two episodes of have already been released Agathe, who else?the new Marvel series for Disney+. It’s a spin-off of the marvelous Scarlet Witch and Vision (WandaVision) which comes three years later and focuses on the character of Agatha Harkness (Catherine Hahn). Agathe, who else? It is, for now, a more than worthy product, fun, agile and that plays with the speculation of enthusiasts. The problem is the same that has been plaguing the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for 3 years: to be able to see something in this world, you have to do your homework. Nothing they do is suitable for new subscribers. This niche, ultimately, causes fatigue, boredom and laziness. This dictatorship of fans, these constant references to oneself that make evolution and change very difficult. However, what interests us is a stimulating fiction that mixes genres of all kinds (this goes from sitcom to terror organically) and this has a foundry perfect and visually overwhelming scenes. We would have liked the misadventures of this supposedly evil witch to occur much earlier, especially so that we wouldn’t have to make an effort to remember what happened before in the MCU, but that’s what the platform industry has.

Scarlet Witch and Vision This was Marvel’s first series and it turned out to be a masterpiece. It arrived in 2021, at a time when the UMC was booming following the indescribable success of Avengers: Endgame. Many of us have followed, without problems, all the products of this superheroic universe, so the story of Wanda Maximoff We were interested and we had it fresh. But the best thing is the commitment to risk that this miniseries involved. During the first three episodes, the viewer did not understand what was happening. These were chapters that paid homage to the sitcoms of the 50s and 70s in which the protagonists (Wanda and Vision – deceased in Avengers: Infinity War) had a happy marriage and had two children. Then (attention, spoilers), we discovered that it was a spell cast by Maximoff, who, unable to overcome the duel, had held an entire city against her will to be part of her fantasy. Thus, we were sold a deep story that reflected on the acceptance of death and our own identity.

Then Wanda’s drama continued in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, film in which the Scarlet Witch (Marvel’s most powerful character) tries (in a very bloody way) to find her children, lost in parallel realities. In this film, Wanda would be dead.

The fact is that one of the big surprises he had in store for us Scarlet Witch and Vision was the character of Agatha Harkness, a complete scene stealer who turned out to be the villain of the series played by Catherine Hahna wonderful actress who finally faced mass popularity after decades of distinguishing herself in supporting roles.

Agathe, who else? It begins with the protagonist still under the spell of Scarlet Witch, who stole all her powers and condemned her to continue living in a parallel fantasy. For this reason, the beginning of the first episode is a cynical and brilliant homage to Nordic detective series, in which Agatha/Agnes is a policewoman investigating the death of a woman in the middle of the forest (Is it Wanda?) but 30 minutes into the sequences, the thing is broken and Agatha remembers again who she was thanks to the characters Rio Vidal, a witch linked to Agatha’s past and played by the always magnetic Aubrey Square and by a mysterious teenager played by Joe Locke (favorite). This role is the great enigma of the series. No one can know his real name and origin and many fans assume that he is Billy, one of Wanda Maximoff’s children. But there is also another possibility. Let’s remember that in the comics, Agatha – who is not so bad and helps the Fantastic Four – has a son who becomes a power-hungry villain.

Everything that has been read so far demonstrates how complex the UMC is. This is its main problem: what is required of the average viewer, especially since the multiverse and parallel realities plots began. It feels like you have to study a master’s degree before you see a Marvel product and it’s exhausting.. And it’s a shame for products as fun and well-made as Agathe, who else? Really, from a television point of view, it’s a great series. Of course, only fans can enjoy it.
