A study on the overall management of organic waste from a pig farm, the work of Joanes Etxegoien Iriarte (Public University of Navarra, UPNA), was winner of the first edition of the Best Master’s Thesis (TFM) awards from the Grup Vall Companys Chair – UdL (University of Lleida) of Sustainable food.
The presentation of this prize, endowed with 4,000 eurostook place last week during the third ILO Congress, within the framework of the Sant Miquel Agrarian Fair (Lleida). The second prize, of 2,000 euros, was awarded to Anna Vilà and the third, of 1,000 euros, to Ivan Robles; both from the University of Lleida.
The winning work proposes the use of biogas generated of their slurry as fuel for an animal incinerator, meeting the dual need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve internal biosecurity and mortality management. The results indicate that the pig droppings They have a potential of 21.2 cubic meters of biogas per ton. The project proposes a reduction of nearly 445,000 kg of CO2 per year on the farm.
Before the awards ceremony, the President of the Vall Companys Group – The UdL organized a conference by Alfons Cornella, founder of the consulting companies Infonomia and EDGERS, and the training companies Institut of Next and Curiosity Atelier. The keynote presentation was titled “Innovation is not a whim or a luxury, it is the means to generate new value”.
