Matadero’s Nave 10 is reborn as a center for contemporary dramatic creation

It was celebrated as a birth, but in reality it is a rebirth: that of Nave 10 of Matadero, which has become independent of the Spanish Theatre – like its older sister, Nave 11 – and begins its journey as a space dedicated to contemporary dramatic creation (within the framework of the reorganization and specialization of the large municipal stage spaces) under the impetus of Luis Luqué. The Madrid director stressed that his programming is based on four pillars: contemporary creation in Spanish, new staging, reflection and training in the performing arts. “La Nave 10 Matadero is a place to write, make and see theatre; a safe, friendly and caring space for the artists it hosts,” said Luis Luque in his presentation.

Among the axes of the Nef 10 project – which includes spaces such as the Salle Max Aub, the Salle Béton and the Salle Bois – is the creation of the figure of the guest director: a director will stage one of the productions, give a workshop for professionals and provide artistic support to the young director – there will also be one per season -; the guest in 2024-25 is Marta Pazosand the young director is Beatriz Jaen. Another of the figures present in the project will be the playwright: Antonio Rojano This will be the one for this first season and its mission is to “advise and coordinate all the dramatic creation projects of the season”. Finally, La Nef 10 will create a “school for senior spectators” to involve the elderly people of the Arganzuela and Usera neighborhoods, neighbors of the theater.

The theatre’s programme includes twelve performances, seven of which are absolute premieres. The season will open with ‘Joan of Arc‘, a text by Sergio Martínez Vila directed by Marta Pazos and performed by Georgina Amorós, Katalin Arana, Macarena García, Lucía Juárez, Bea de Paz, Ana Polvorosa and Joana Vilapuig.
