Mazón demands work to save the Júcar-Vinalopó transfer

The president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, required to the government to undertake the works from the San Diego pond to Villena (Alicante) in order not to endanger the viability of the Júcar-Vinalopó transfer. “The minister HE engaged and he did nothing,” he stressed, referring to Teresa Ribera.

The Executive of Pedro Sánchez “continues to forget and burden a fundamental commitment to development, which is the modernization of the reservoir, which is an objective and a priority”, which, according to Mazón, jeopardizes the hydraulic infrastructures that are beginning to operate in the province of Alicante. “All the efforts we make here will be useless,” he warned.

And to set an example, he announced “the deployment from the main transfer pipeline Júcar-Vinalopó” and announced that in the coming weeks, “the development of this project” will be commissioned to improve this infrastructure, the works of which will have a budget of approximately 40 million of euros.

This is what he announced during the first editing act of the ‘Grapes Packed from Vinalopó‘ which took place in Monforte del Cid.

He clarified that “the Government of Change is fulfilling its commitments and duties towards farmers and irrigators” and reaffirmed its commitment to the sector as one of its “priority areas of action”.

He thus highlighted the start “in record time” of sections I and II of the post-vase Júcar-Vinalopó “with a joint investment of 33 million euros to improve the irrigation systems of 30,000 hectares from the municipalities of Agost, Elche, Novelda, Petrer and Monforte del Cid. It is expected to be operational in the summer of 2026.

During his speech, Mazón listed other measures of the Consell such as “the extension for this year of AIDS for the promotion of the rational use of water and the improvement of the energy efficiency of irrigation, with a budget of 9 million euros”, which is added to the 12.6 million euros for the modernization of the irrigation systems of the Acequia Real del Júcar.

Likewise, he highlighted the increased investment in security systems purification of water in recent decades in the province of Alicante or the increase in the regional allocation to agricultural insurance to reach 32 million euros, which “places the Valencian Community as the community that contributes the most in all of Spain.”

For Mazón, these measures show that “the Valencian Community demands what it deserves in terms of water, because it achieves both the reuse and the modernization of irrigation as in infrastructure, to be more effectiveefficient and sustainable ecologically and economically. In this sense, he recalled that 40% of the purified and reused water in Spain is produced in the Valencian Community.

Other measures to support the sector

The president thus once again claimed “the water which corresponds to the Tajo-Segura transfer whose flow has been cropped 25 times“and regretted that the central government “has created a water debt with the Valencian Community that is added to that of financing or strategic structures.”

In this regard, Mazón defended a “distribution of water based on rigor and objectivity as opposed to ideological or electoral ones”, while highlighting the alliance of the Valencian Community with the Region of Murcia, Andalusia and the Community of Madrid “to present, in a joint and coordinated manner, allegations to the operating rules of the Tajo-Segura transfer in a historic alliance that represents more than 23 million Spaniards.

A sustainable and quality culture

The President attended court of the first cluster of the “Vinalopó Embolsada Table Grape”, as well as the presentation of the campaign for the 2024-2025 season of this Protected Designation of Origin.

According to him, the Vinalopó grape in a bag is a sign of identify of the Valencian Community that brings culture, prosperity, innovation, more than 13,000 positions of jobdurability, quality and excellence.

Thus, he praised “the ingenuity, initiative and entrepreneurial spirit of the people of Alicante who, more than a century ago, knew how to innovate from tradition to offer the world a product synonymous with excellence.”

The event was also attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Water, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Barrachina; the Minister of Innovation, Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Nuria Montes; the President of the Provincial Council of Alicante, Toni Pérez; the Mayor of Monforte del Cid, Juan José Hernández Rico; and the President of the Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin of Vinalopó Sack Table Grapes (CRDOP), José Bernabéu.
