MiBGAS and DH2 Energy launch first renewable hydrogen auction

MIBGAS Derivatives, the operator of the Iberian gas futures market, and DH2 Energy, developer and producer of green hydrogenlaunches the first auction for the purchase of renewable hydrogen in the Iberian market.

The process begins today, Friday November 15, with the release of the documentation, on the MIBGAS public website, for those who wish to participate in this open auction.

The auction is aimed at all companies interested in the acquisition of renewable hydrogen, at national and international level, no restrictions on the type of hydrogen application.

Purchase of renewable hydrogen

Different lots will be offered, depending on the volume of supply and the duration of the contract, from a base price for each of them. The first phase is prequalification, which begins today, Friday. The next phase will be qualification and, subsequently, another phase will be opened, only among qualified companies, presentation of offers.

This last phase will be competitive. Thus, the companies which present the best offers and are selected, as well as DH2 Energy final agreements will be negotiated bilaterally which will give rise, where applicable, to the corresponding contracts.

Participants will be able to submit bids for the purchase of renewable hydrogen generated by DH2 Energy’s Hysencia plant. The factory is located in Aragon and The start of work is planned for mid-2025while its commissioning will take place in the first half of 2027.

Pioneering initiative

The Hysencia power plant, with 35 MW of electrolysis capacity, 49 MWp of photovoltaic power and 10 MW of grid connection, is a pioneering initiative that won the first European auction.

This auction is financed by the Innovation Fund, within the framework of the European Hydrogen Bank through which Hysenceobtained this year the integrated environmental authorization, is one of the first commercial green hydrogen projects in the Iberian Peninsula. The renewable hydrogen produced by Hysencia will contribute to decarbonize the sectors of industry and mobility.

The president of MIBGAS, Raúl Yunta, hopes that these types of projects will encourage a nascent market necessary for the decarbonization process and energy transition.

Potential of green hydrogen

“At MIBGAS we are convinced of the potential of green hydrogen and projects like Hysencia are essential to start laying the foundations for a renewable hydrogen market. “We are excited to contribute to decarbonization through the development of the green hydrogen market,” says Yunta.

For his part, the general director of DH2 Energy, Marcos López-Brea Baquero, declared that “For the first time, the Iberian market operator launches a renewable hydrogen auction and this with the production of DH2 Energy’s Hysencia factory, which will be a benchmark in the sector.

“This auction represents an important step for the development of renewable hydrogen and we are convinced that it will contribute to stimulate demand and make progress in creating a stable market for renewable hydrogen,” explains López-Brea.

Hydrogen plants

DH2 Energy is a company based in Madrid (Spain) dedicated to the development of large-scale renewable hydrogen plants from water electrolysis and the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives. DH2 Energy is one of the largest developers of renewable hydrogen in Spain, with one of the largest portfolios of projects in development. DH2 Energy is present in the Iberian Peninsula as well as other markets such as France, Mexico and Uruguay.

Foreign exchange market

MIBGAS Derivatives is the organized market or exchange of MIBGAS SA for the future products transfer of ownership of gas delivered to the virtual balance point (PVB), as well as LNG products in plants and natural gas in underground storage.

MIBGAS is committed to the development of the renewable gas market and, more specifically, renewable hydrogen. The market operator is authorized (BOE, September 25, 2024) to trade renewable gas ownership transfer products, guarantees of origin and associated sustainability tests on its platform.
