Russia plans to introduce a ban on cryptocurrency mining during the heating season in the regions of Siberia, New Regions and the Caucasus. Due to the difficult situation of regime balance in the electric power industry, restrictions are planned to be established until 2031.
Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak held a meeting of the government commission, at which they discussed the conditions for introducing a ban on the mining of digital currency on the territory of Russian regions with a complex regime and a balanced situation in the electric power industry.
“This ban is planned to be introduced during the autumn-winter heating period until 2031 in the Irkutsk region, certain parts of the Republic of Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory,” – reports the Ministry of Energy. They added that it was also proposed to introduce restrictions in the territories of Dagestan, North Ossetia (Alania, Ingushetia, Chechnya, the Kabardino-Balkarian and Karachay-Cherkess republics), as well as in the territories of the DPR, the LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson . regions.
For now, the Deputy Prime Minister tasked the Ministry of Energy to, together with energy companies and other interested authorities, work on the introduction of a mechanism to monitor the implementation of the ban, the release of electrical energy used for the technological industry. connection of other consumers and the introduction of a ban in other regions.
Electricity consumption is growing in Russia. And in some regions, existing capacity can no longer meet demand at peak loads. This applies, for example, to southern Russia.
“At the event, proposals from the Ministry of Energy were considered to cover the electricity and capacity deficit expected for 2030 in the Southern IPS through the construction of new generation facilities with a total installed capacity of at least 1.9 GW. “The Ministry of Energy, together with energy companies, has been instructed to work on the issue of expanding the Dzhubginskaya thermal power plant.” – informs the ministry.
As reported EADaily In 2024, hundreds of new gray cryptocurrency mining spots were identified in Russia, some of which illegally consume as much electricity as entire towns where they are located. The leaders are the Irkutsk region and the North Caucasus. Violators do not pay anything for electricity or do so individually. The energy workers try to catch them and get their money back.
In August, the Russian president signed a law on the legalization of cryptocurrency mining activities in Russia starting November 1, 2024.
“I believe that today Russia is already one of the world leaders in mining. This is due to excess energy capacity in Siberia. But there are certain questions that have arisen recently.” — spoke at the Eastern Economic Forum Vladimir Putin.
