Education Minister Pilar Alegría has urged the Alicante school, where a student in a wheelchair cannot access the classroom because the elevator has been broken for months, to make the necessary repairs or find an alternative solution that guarantees access.
“I am very sorry that this child’s right to receive a quality education is absolutely diminished,” explained the head of Education in an interview with Radiocable, who assured that she was aware of the problem that “will not happen one day, nor one week, but several months.
The poor condition of the elevator at the Voramar school makes it impossible to use, forcing the mother of the 11-year-old student, who could not climb the stairs alone, to carry him on her back to take him to class. As the minister recalled, the repair is “the responsibility of the city hall”, although she assured that the solution involves “either repairing it or making some kind of change within the educational center so that they can move a classroom and the child does not have to “climb the stairs”.
For Alegría, “formulas can be sought so that the right to education enjoyed by all children reaches everyone, with the responsibility of administrations to give a positive response.”
In this sense, he recognized that when “it is time to inaugurate or open a school at the beginning of the school year, some problems may arise, but when this happens, regional administrations must have a plan B so that children receive the quality care they need.” and, of course, that teachers can work in quality spaces.
Alegría took the opportunity to recall the increase in the budget made by the Government of the Nation in education. “We have increased this amount by more than 175 percent, reaching almost 400 million euros for school textbooks, in order to improve resources in education and truly make our education more inclusive,” added the minister.
