- II Meeting of Mayors in La Coruña: “Our goal is to continue changing the world”
The first vice-president of the Government and Minister of Finance, Maria Jesus Monteroparticipated this Tuesday in the II Meeting of Mayors held in La Coruña and chaired by the councilor of Herculina, Inés Rey. She pleaded in favor of equality policies that allow “the exercise of female leadership”, in addition to “scare away threats” presented by “extreme right parties” for women’s rights.
This Tuesday, La Coruña became the house of mayors of all Spain in this event attended by around thirty councilors from Galicia and elsewhere. The meeting was held under the theme “Taking decisions to change the world” and lasted two days.
First, in the morning, the councilors read the Second Declaration of María Pita at the Municipal Palace. In the afternoon, they participated in a event at Palexco with different round tables on women in local power and gender policies applied to urban planning in cities.

“We are at a historic moment”
Montero made a brief intervention before the Palexco meeting, where he considered that the rise of far-right parties in the international context represents a threat to women. “They make us suffer setbacks in our rights and freedomsafter what it costs to advance each step so that equality between men and women is effective,” he said.
The minister also highlighted progress in terms of parity and female leadership, and assured that Spain was one of 14 European economies to have reached parity: “For the first time, there is a woman President of the Supreme Court and two Spaniards on the EU board, with Nadia Calviño at the head of the EIB and Teresa Ribera as first vice-president of the Commission .”
However, he recalled that There is still work to be done: “Parity, in addition to being a question of justice, means that countries grow stronger and more sustainably,” he explained.
For his part, the mayor of La Coruña called on the consolidation of the presence of women leaders in all fieldss: “The data shows that we are at a historical point where societies require changes in models and structures, to adapt to reality. Prioritizing women is not an option, it is a necessity “, he assessed.
Rey recalled that one of the goals of the SDGs for 2030 is to achieve equality, and referred to the differences still present not only in Spain but in different parts of the world. Thus, he underlined the importance of opening our eyes towards the war conflicts that occur in Afghanistan, Ukraine or Gaza and encouraged the advisors to show solidarity with women at the international level: “The challenge remains to consolidate this generation in which our girls will look like tomorrow,” she added.
Finally, the Minister of Social Policy and Equality, Fabiola Garciapraised the role that women play in local politics, whose contribution he described as “fundamental and unstoppable” and which contributes to creating a reality that is “increasingly just, equitable and united.” The councilor also assured that to move towards equality, it is essential to collaboration and joint work of all administrations.
