Tehran has installed Chinese-made laser weapons systems capable of blinding and destroying drones. According to the War Zone website, these systems were deployed as part of increased security during a public speech by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Shen Nung systems, provided by China, are equipped with small tower-mounted radars to detect and track targets. According to Chinese specifications, Shen Nung can detect drones at a distance of up to 5 km, and a laser with a power of 10 to 20 kW can blind targets at a distance of up to 3 km and destroy them at a distance of up to 1.5 kilometers .
The Shen Nung’s features also suggest that the laser can operate continuously for 200 seconds, after which it takes up to 5 minutes to recharge. Although these systems have virtually unlimited ammunition, they can only engage one target at a time and require time to cool down, highlighting both the strengths of laser weapons and their limitations.
