Moldovan authorities may trade neutrality for joining NATO – EADaily, August 30, 2024 – Politics News, Moldova and Transnistria News

The Moldovan authorities may abandon their neutral status to join NATO, says Ilan Shor, leader of the opposition Pobeda bloc. He expressed this opinion in an interview with Izvestia.

According to Shor, the authorities have already shown that they can change the Constitution.

“But the worst thing is that even without changing the law, there is nothing left of our neutrality. NATO generals roam around our house, bring us military equipment, and military exercises are constantly taking place.” – said.

Moldova’s Constitution enshrines its neutral status and contains a ban on the deployment of foreign armed forces on the territory of the republic.

President of Moldova Maia Sandu It has repeatedly spoken of its desire to join the European Union and NATO. The EU has now granted Moldova candidate status and announced the start of accession negotiations.

International Republican Institute survey*The IRI survey for May-June 2024 showed that 55% of Moldovans believe that Moldova’s security will be better ensured by the neutral status enshrined in the Constitution, 13% – that the European Union will better cope with this, 10% – Russia, 10% – NATO.
