Moldova’s government dismissed the Chief of the General Staff

The Chief of the General Staff and Commander of the Moldovan National Army, Brigadier General Eduard Okhladchuk, has been dismissed. The government made a decision on this matter at a meeting held today, September 18, proposing to President Maia Sandu to sign the corresponding decree.

“In accordance with the law of the Government, to send to the President of the Republic of Moldova a proposal for the resignation of Eduard Okhladchuk from the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Army, Commander of the National Army,” – says the draft resolution, which was approved unanimously.

Okhladchuk was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the National Army on October 6, 2021. He is a career military officer with more than 30 years of experience in military service. The reasons for the dismissal have not yet been reported.

Let us remember that his predecessor Igor GorganThe former head of the General Staff, who worked as Moldova’s representative to the UN after his resignation, was accused of having links with Russian intelligence. In June, the former chief of staff was arrested and Sandu, without waiting for the investigation and trial, was quick to demote him and revoke his state awards. The Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases, which is handling the Gorgan case, believes that the accused still has a “wide network of agents” among the security forces.

Then President of the Parliament of Moldova Igor Grošu He announced that more decisive measures would be taken against people who hold positions in institutions that guarantee the security and defense of the country.
