The company car, a symbol of a certain social status, has endured… or almost. “vélotaf” is in fashion, a contraction of “bicycle” and “taf” (short for “work to be done”). 500,000 people went to work by bicycle in 2023, according to the French Federation of Bicycle Users (FUB). Proof of the popularity of this practice: the appearance of the company bicycle.
“The number of company bicycles in France is estimated at 20,000”explains Arthur de Jerphanion, director of the French brand Tandem, founded in 2021. “Between 2022 and 2024, we quintupled the size of our fleet. » The company, which aims to achieve a turnover of 21 million euros in 2027 (six times more than in 2024), has 4,500 employees. At the beginning of November, ODDO BHF bank ordered two fleets of 70 bicycles for its Paris headquarters as part of its soft mobility programme.
Proof of the growing interest of employees and companies, records the FUB “ between 3 and 4 times more registrations for the “emplo” stampand“pro-cycling” only before summer 2023 »underlines Louis Duthoit, responsible for the “pro-cycling businessman” label for the federation. From Strasbourg (Eurometropolis) to Toulouse (National Center for Space Studies), via Grenoble (EDF), 250 places are already labeled. “It will be double by the end of the year and we hope to reach 1,000 by the end of 2025.”
“A favorable context”
Multiplication of limited traffic zones (ZTL), 120 kilometers of new housing developments on the Ile-de-France only during the Olympic year… “The context is clearly favorable”, believes Louis Duthoit. Added to this is a tax incentive for companies. From 1Ahem January 2019, a reduction in corporate tax. 25% of the costs incurred apply to those who offer fleets of bicycles to their employees. The employer must cover at least 70% of the rent or purchase price. Example in Tandem: the employee can be equipped with a company bicycle for an average of 30 euros per month. A price that includes delivery, after-sales services (repair and maintenance), accessories, training and theft insurance.
A push as a directive urges companies to reduce their CO emissions2 and publish a report on its ecological transition policy starting in January 2025. “When we calculated our carbon footprint, we realized that commuting [ils représentent 13 % des gaz à effet de serre des transports d’après l’Insee] “It was an area of improvement where we could directly reduce our impact”explains Caroline d’Hérouville, CSR coordinator and human resources director at ODDO BHF.
