More than a hundred dead and 70 injured in Nepal due to the worst rains the country has seen in half a century

At least 112 people have died in Nepal due to floods and landslides caused after the intense rains that have been falling for days in this Asian country. In addition, at least 64 are missing and the number of victims could increase.

The police rescued hundreds of people, of which 73 were injured of varying severity depending on the region of the country, as reported by Dan Bahdur Karki, spokesperson for the Nepalese police.

More than half of the deaths were recorded in Kathmandu, the country’s capital, and surrounding districts. These were seriously affected by floods and landslides which caused what the local press described as the worst rainfall in the city in decades.

Schools closed for three days

In addition, heavy rains caused serious damage to infrastructure, including roads and bridges. Domestic flights, for their part, are resuming while land connections linking Kathmandu to the rest of the country remain blocked.

The Government, for its part, decided to close all schools in the country for three days and fail all exams of the course starting Sunday.

Nepal, located in mountainous terrain with many rivers, is a country particularly vulnerable to natural disasters. Authorities also warned that the rains would continue and, although less intense, could cause more damage.
