More than half of Afghanistan’s population needs humanitarian assistance – EADaily – Afghanistan News. Afghanistan. Afghanistan News. Afghanistan Division. Afghanistan News. News from Afghanistan today.

Some 23.7 million people, more than half of Afghanistan’s population, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. This is stated in the report of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), reports Ariana News.

According to the International Federation, natural disasters, the growing impact of climate change, population displacement, economic challenges and food insecurity are the main factors contributing to the current humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is among the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change and natural disaster risks. The country is also prone to earthquakes, with nearly 400 tremors recorded in the past three years, including major quakes like the 6.3 magnitude quake in Herat province last October.

The IFRC report says all of this has combined to worsen the already unstable situation in Afghanistan. More than half of households are experiencing an economic crisis and more than 85 percent of the country’s population lives below the poverty line. The country’s economy relies heavily on foreign aid and remittances, which have decreased significantly since the 2021 political changes.
