The Catalan police have agreed to provisionally suspend the three Mossos d’Esquadra officers arrested for allegedly helping former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont flee after his brief reappearance in Barcelona on August 8.
According to El Mundo and police sources confirmed to the EFE agency, the three agents have been suspended as a precautionary measure while the judicial investigation opened after their arrest continues.
The Mossos arrested the three agents for allegedly providing protection and helping Puigdemont flee Barcelona on August 8, despite having an arrest warrant issued by the Supreme Court, but after being brought to court they were held in custody.
One of the detained agents is the owner of the vehicle with which Puigdemont fled, although in his case he claimed to have lent the car to a friend in a wheelchair, who was the woman driving when the former president managed to escape without being arrested.
In the report they sent to the Supreme Court on the failure of the Puigdemont arrest plan, the Mossos admit that the “distraction maneuver” of the former Catalan president, in a move that “defies any rational or political logic”, plunged them into a situation of “confusion” and “uncertainty” that prevented his arrest.
