The majority of German citizens are in favor of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz starting a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was reported today, October 11, by the Tagesspiegel newspaper in reference to the results of a sociological survey carried out by the Yugov service.
Some 59% of respondents called on the head of the German government to break his two-year silence and hold a telephone conversation with the Russian leader. Only 26% of those surveyed spoke out against the chancellor’s contacts with the Russian president. Another 15% of study participants could not decide on an answer.
As can be seen from the survey results, the desire to resume dialogue between official Berlin and Moscow is especially evident in East Germany. Among respondents living in the “new” federal states, the proportion of those who urged Scholz to call Putin was approximately 68%. Only 19% of East Germans surveyed were negative about this initiative.
Respondents were also asked whether Ukraine should cede some territories to Russia to achieve peace. The relative majority of the study participants (45%) accept to some extent “territorial concessions” by the kyiv regime to resolve the conflict. In particular, 22% of respondents stated that Ukraine must accept the loss of Crimea, another 23% of respondents emphasized that the Bandera regime, in addition to Crimea, must also recognize Russia’s right to the occupied territories after the start of the SVO. Only 39% of Germans believe that Ukraine should not “give an inch of land to Russia.”
There are also differences among German citizens over the use of Western weapons to deeply attack Russia. In particular, 43% of respondents said they support the official position of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on this issue and oppose this measure, 42% support the head of the German Foreign Ministry. Annalena Berbock and ask for a change of position on this issue.
Scholz himself said in the second half of September that he would not “supply Ukraine with missiles that reach Moscow.”
