Mukhtar Babayev: “Decreased rainfall in Azerbaijan affected the harvest”

“Decreased rainfall in Azerbaijan in recent years has affected productivity and harvest.”

The “Report” reports that this was stated by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, designated President of COP29, Mukhtar Babayev, at the “Baku Climate Action Week”.

According to him, agriculture is an important part of Azerbaijan’s economy and more than a third of the country’s workforce works in this field:

“But in recent years, rainfall in Azerbaijan has decreased on average by almost 10%. This has affected productivity and harvest. In addition, the Caspian Sea, which has another unique ecosystem, is drying up. The decrease in the level of the water in the Caspian Sea has serious consequences for marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as for biodiversity and coastal infrastructure.”

He added that if steps are not taken in this direction, these devastating results will become the norm around the world:

“Climate change is estimated to make large-scale droughts 100 times more frequent. A 2-degree rise in global temperatures is predicted to cause 200 million more people to go hungry. This will increase pressure on water and agricultural systems in all countries.”
