Murcia government excavates 7th century BC Phoenician ship in Mazarrón: “It’s a historic day”

The Government of the Region of Murcia, led by Fernando Lopez Mirasannounced this Friday the extraction of the first piece of the Phoenician boat Mazarron 2 Immersed in the 7th century BC on the beach of the island of Mazarrón. López Miras participated in the search for the lost ship and stressed that it was a “historic day for the Region of Murcia”. He also recalled that this milestone was reached thanks to “many years of work, debate, analysis and collaboration between administrations, research centres and universities”.

This decision was endorsed at the international meeting of experts held in National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQVA) in May 2021, under the aegis of UNESCO and with the participation of the international scientific community working on underwater archaeological heritage.

The piece brought to the surface is a part of the arc of the ship belonging to the starboard side, which will give way to the process of salvaging the rest of this precious wreck and to the subsequent restoration and study works, in order to arrive in the best conditions for its future conservation and exhibition.

López Miras particularly thanked the experts of the University of Valencia who were in charge of this project, and said that the extraction that begins today “will be hard work, but it has been rigorously prepared so that we can enjoy this heritage and better understand the habits of the sedentary populations.” during this time.

Similarly, he explained that “This will be a very important step forward. for research, as it is one of the few sunken ships of the period that is virtually intact, from bow to stern. So this will be a milestone in the world of research and we are proud to be collaborating to make this happen on our shores.

The regional leader said that the extraction processtreatment and conservation “it will take several years, but we are in the best hands: those of scientists and researchers. “We will all be able to know better what we were and we will be very attentive to all these discoveries.”

It must be said that since 2018, the Government of the Region of Murcia has promoted, in collaboration with the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology of Cartagena, a series of archaeological interventions on-site monitoring and control of the state of conservation of the wreck.

In 2021, in order to ensure your protectionTo save it and enjoy it for future generations, it was agreed to extract it and further process it in the premises of the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQVA), a decision that was adopted on the basis of the technical criteria of the working group created years ago for this purpose and composed of specialists in the field and representatives of all administrations.
